Awesome Noise: The Coachwhips

The Coach Whips carve giant sonic songs out of heavy distorted guitar and vocals screamed through a mega phone . They are a clear punch to the senses . Upon further listens it begins to meld and become more clear . They build a sonic skeleton and let you fill the rest in. It's noise punk with hidden harmonies and subersive sexual lyrics and innuendos. They take the patented Ramones 1, 2 , 3 , 4 and bastardizes it to great comic effect on Double Death. It's a great listen for barreling down a busy interstate while poppin pills.

Remember the movie "Bar Fly" with Faye Dunaway and a young turbulent Mickey Rourke? That screenpaly was Written by Bukowski. Bukowski wrote volumes of poetry ,wrote novels and gave poetry readings like a rock concert, normally drunk.

Play the Piano Drunk Like a Percussion Instrument Until the Fingers Begin to Bleed a Bit was the first Bukoski I found tucked away in a corner of an old bookstore. Bukowski was always hard to find.(for me at least at the time.) It was always worth it i have read Bukowski than any other author. There is a truth and beauty to be found in these works. He was the original punk poet.Bukowski wrote about woman,booze,sex,gambling horses and the mundane trivialities of life. He is an underground hero that can't be forgot.

"Punk rock was my first girl,she left me a scar so we're not through yet"

Beulah were an incredible band out of San Francisco consisting of two guys Miles Kurosky and Bill Swan. They started out on The Elephant 6 label with Neutral Milk Hotel , Of Montreal and Elf Power . Their First album Handsome Western States was a lo-fi garage epic filled with great dirty guitars and heartfelt lyrics. They sound Like The Beach boys then they crash in noisy and full of emotion.Stand out tracks include "The secretaries blues" and "lay low for the let down". Their next album When Your Hearstrings Break saw them starting to really grasp songwriting and gain chops musically. Stretching out as as far as their song titles like "Emma Blowgun's Last Stand" and "If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart". This time around they discovered horns strings and a variety of found sounds to make maybe the best album in their career.

The Coast is Never Clear released in 2001 was a great follow up with a number of now Beulah classics like "Silver Lining" and "Gravity's Bringing Us Down" . This one is my sentimental favorite. I find myself going back to this time and time again. This one leans more towards sunny pop and bright harmonies it's easily the most accessible Beulah album.

Beulah's Final album was aptly titled Yoko. Its alot darker in tone and lyrics. At this point the band members were going through divorces and released one of the most emotionally devastating break up albums that could be either about a girl or the band. The full album is devastatingly gorgeous and even more beautiful in the raw demo form with Miles voice out and center backed by guitars and Bill Swan's horn. These Guys are even more incredible in live bootleg form where its stripped to its ragged core and they just rage. Enjoy some live Beulah Bootlegs.

Breaking Artist: The Fatigue

The Fatigue's are a cool new band out of Brighton England with a great sound. The lyrics are tongue in cheek clever and the guitar interplay between Steve and Lee is tight as hell. They cite The Libertines and Jimi Hendrix as two of their major influences,as a fan both I recommend these guys. Great new music from a hard working band over the pond.

Pearl Jam Bassist Jeff Ament was beaten and robbed April 27th details are just now starting to emerge. The robbery happened outside Southern Tracks Recording Studio in Atlanta. The robbers made off with three grand and a passport. Jeff got a nice bang on the head and treated on the scene for a laceration.

Are you familiar with Mother Love Bone? The were almost Pearl Jam without Eddie. Andrew Wood was the lead singer and died of a heroin overdose. Temple Of The Dog was formed out of tribute to him and features Eddie recording with what would later become pearl Jam on Hunger Strike. When I was a teenager I almost couldn't go a day without listening to it.

The Dark Night of the soul is a 100+ page book of photographs and art by David Lynch with the music being the soundtrack now will be released without the music just a CDR labeled ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’ Fuckin incredible .

The Killers on Letterman

As I have professed previously. I do have a spot in my indie-garage-freak rock heart for The Killers. I have always dug the vocals and lyrics of one Mr. Brandon Flowers. I remember playing "all these things that I've done" super loud at the stoplight when the choir kicked and I belted it right along super loud in my girl got red then embarrassed squirmed in her seat, thought I was crazy and preceded to roll the windows up and sink a little further into the seat. Six months later the song is all over the place on radio,TV, nike commercials and I don't seem so crazy. Sometimes you just need to let your musical prejudices fall and enjoy good music for what it is. I got off point. The Killers were on Letterman Monday and brought a 20 piece orchestra and a harp.Did it work? Let me know what you think.

They make loud emotional psychedelic music with an electronic spine.Big Zeppelin like guitars dominate and the drummer sounds like the devil spawn of John Bonham.Each album is dense and thick daring you to break it. I reccomend picking up Ten Silver Drops first then work forward or backward you won't be disappointed.

They were kicking around named the Muslims but came to hate the name due to ignorant and racist comments.Enough with the name how do they sound...fucking killer. Young brash brave and full of potential. The lyrics have a simple off the cuff charm to them and are delivered in a lazy deadpan. Echoing Iggy Pop , Jim Morrison and Lou Reed. Wilco Wilco(The Album) Now Streaming

So I managed to get my hands on an advance copy of (The Wilco) album and its no hype this album is awesome . I had some real trepidations and worries about this album but no more. I am prepared to have this playing on repeat all summer . The Band sound more alive and way better than the live boots that have been hanging around . Like I said before Sky Blue Sky left me wanting more. This album makes up for it . I can't wait to see the new songs live. As a special treat Wilco is streaming the album here

I am getting so excited for the new Flaming Lips album rumored to be titled Embryonic. According to Billboard it's going to be a double album. Billboard caught up with Wayne to discuss the new album. Two tracks are confirmed "Convinced of the Hex" and "I Don't Understand Karma". A response to the Lennon classic "Instant Karma".

Their First Album was Gun For You in 99 and they recorded two more unbelievable albums The Greenhornes and Dual Mono.Each of the albums sounds like it recorded in another time before digital. They make beautiful old school Rock and Roll you could dance to at a sock hop or start a riot .

Spoon are an amazing band out of Austin Texas . The band formed in '93 and recorded their debut The Nefarious EP. Within a year they were signed to Matador Records and getting ready to release their first full length album Telephono.The Debut record drew heavy comparisons to Wire and The Pixies.All the while hinting at something greater to come.Less than a year later The Soft Effects Ep came out and showed more range and growth .

The Buzz around that EP gained Elektra Records attention and were signed. Spoon went to work on their major label debut A series of sneaks but as music labels do, they dropped the ball and didn't support the record at all.If it was a perfect world "Car Radio" would have been the summer song of 97.To make matters worse Elektra’s A&R man Ronn Laffitte, who was responsible for the deal, was fired. This caused the band to go record another EP "The Agony of Laffitte. Which was a scathing vindictive attack on the way major labels operate.Laffitte Don't fail me now illustrates this beautifully

Spoon put that EP out on Connor Obersts label Saddle Creek Records . Connor Oberst and Brit Daniels would later record their own EP together.In 2000 Spoon signed with Merge Records and never looked back.2000 also saw the release of their love ways EP basically a warm up for their full length Girls Can Tell. Girls Can Tell is a masterpiece of sharp angled guitars and tough precise drumming mining rock n rolls past with a fervent grip on the modern. Kiss the Moonlight was the breakout album that took spoon sounds and added an electronic layer of found sounds and features a little beat boxing too. Gimme Fiction followed and that did well . Gimme Fiction has always been my secret favorite spoon album . It's super dense and reveals more and more on repeated listening. Monsieur Valentine is like a Dylan B-Side the way Brit sets up the story. "I turn my camera on" will not leave your head for weeks. I summon you is a gloriously simple song that is masterfully executed.

Their latest Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was released July 9 2007 and reached number 10 on the billboard 200. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga took The Spoon sound and threw it on its ear. Adding horns and greater production. Its a finely crafted release with each song standing out on its own. "My Little Japanese Cigarette Case" case made its way onto many mixes that summer.It was cool to see this band whose EPs I had collected like illegal narcotics , This Band whom I had seen perform in small clubs make its way onto Letterman,Leno,Conan they also made an appearance on the Saturday Night Live stage.These guys are just hitting their stride . Right now Jim Eno is working with Black Joe Lewis.They also have their own festival happening which we mentioned earlier in the week. So if you have just "heard" of these guys but never really listened check em out . You might have just found your new favorite band.

This is one of my favorite Spoon songs.Love the guitar sound on this and the bass line is sick. I have broken stereos with this song. The drums are totally majestic and the rest of the band moves in arranging pieces like a jigsaw puzzle.

The Paragon Carousel is a beautiful machine that has been my dear neighbor for many moons. Now 81 years old, it is in need of a little love and attention in order for it to survive.

It is my sincere wish for the Paragon Carousel to be a part of the magic of long seaside summer afternoons for many years to come. But it might not get to.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where the great whirling contraptions of mechanical music and light are not as profitable to operate as other things, and carousels are worth much more taken apart and sold in pieces to museums, where one must pay to look at them behind glass, rather than having them simply existing in the world that we now all share.

I spoke with Jeff and Scott and Jeremy about this and they agreed that I should, on behalf of Neutral Milk Hotel, make an appeal to the good people who might have enjoyed the music made over the years, because we think you'd understand especially, and want to help.

Devin Copeland aka Devin The Dude just might be one of the best rappers you never heard of.He got his start with the Odd Squad in the early 90's and released his first solo album in 98. He threw down some verses on "Fuck You" Dre's 2001 Album .

Since then he's released five albums and a greatest hits . The greatest Hits is a good place to start . I find landing gear and Just Tryin' ta Live to be some of his better work but you can start anywhere. Each album is rich with rhymes about pussy , weed,beer,women,broke cars. Devin will have you saying "did he say what I think he said?"..yes he did. It's some great shit check it out.

I love Wilco but I always have a trepidation towards their new album.I always worry the new stuff will not compare with such iconic releases as Being There ,Summerteeth and YHF. Bob Dylan's new album Together Through Life Dropped Tuesday. How do you review Dylan?His Legacy is so grand from the trifecta of blonde on blonde,bring it all back home and hwy 66, To his syrup country of nashville skyline , The horrible 80's, the latest streak . See I'd been hoping to write this sooner but I couldn't quite wrap my head around the album . Perhaps too big a fan.

By now we all know the story Dylan went in to record a song for the road movie, My Own Love Song, which became "Life is Hard" and walked out with a full album . I couldn't stop thinking about Dylan's character Jack Fate in Masked and Anonymous. This is the album he would make .Post apocalyptic blues. Dylan's band still continues to surprise the guitar line on forgetful heart sounds like its coming out the backroom ,while Dylan plays with the limits of his ravaged voice .He shows great control and versatility with his Old throat, hes got the blues voice hes been wanting since Blind Willie Mctell. Dylan Turns lascivious on shake shake mama, saying "shake baby shake like a ship going out to sea" it sounds absurd but its one of the meanest sings on the record making others look feeble by comparison.Jolene relies to heavily on the twelve bar format hes benn overusing but after repeated listens you notice its Dylan sounding like hes enjoying himself . Playing the music he wants to play . Its the sound of an artist refusing to age and continuing to push his abilities.All in all its another fine album in a canon of classics from a living Legend.

So there has been many discussions recently on how musicians are using twitter more and more to get the word out quicker and even other artists are releasing music through them .

In fact Eminem released the Relapse cover art on there first . Twitter has become another great resource to find out about new music . So one of my recent musical discoviries on twitter came from the man himself Snoop Dogg with the simple introdution "luvn this already" . The group in question is The Grouch and Eli two out of eight California rappers affilated with The Living Legends . It's simply great hip hop perfect spring time sound . Slug from MMA favorite atmoshere guests on the track boom . These guys got a great flow check em' out . Its brand new just released on april 7th. Thank Snoops.

So this is killer , last night at Dim Mak Tuesdays in L.A .Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter celebrating Busy P's birthday jumped on the turntables and spun Daft Punk and prince . Sick . I just watched the vids . This is super cool .

Thanks for the scoop StereoGum. I hope all of you are familiar with the Daft Punk . I have my friend Steve to thank for showing me the light in all that is Daft Punk years ago . If you don't know who they are you would still recognize them , Their music has spread so far and has been sampled and used and referenced all over the place including Kanye West . They are completely amazing and have ruled house since the early 90's , yet still very much a mystery . Daft punk are a french duo consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter . They alwayss perform either in a masks or later as robots .
Thomas Bangalter once stated, "We did not choose to become robots. There was an accident in our studio. We were working on our sampler, and at exactly 9:09 a.m. on September 9, 1999, it exploded. When we regained consciousness, we discovered that we had become robots."

This one of the only known photographs of the duo and there is only one other vid of the two of them performing live in Wisconsin at the Further Festival in 96.(Who says cool things don't happen in Wisconsin.) Other than that they have used the Robots and vivid futuristic imagery to separate themselves and not make them thebe stars . Rather let the music and the intense visuals be all part of the art and to represent something greater than themselves . Plus you can dance to it . So last night was the first time we got the human side in over ten years . Plus its great to dance to .

King Khan and the Supreme's fuzzed out ramshackle punk-garage-soul masterpiece has finally been released in the states by Vice Records .

The album was originally released in 2007 on Hazelwood records in Germany and never saw release stateside . King Khan and the shrines are a familiar ride in a vintage Cadillac . If you were to put this album on totally blind you wouldn't know it was current . What is ? sounds like some arcane lost gem from the seventies pulled out of a dusty crate . King Khan has an effortless swagger and his vocals go from doo wop harmony to full on blues growl with lyrics peppered with sharp bits of ironic humor and innuendo . Lending itself to repeated listening . The 70' soul attack does not have a chance to grow tiresome because it shifts from heavy garage hitters like no regrets to the sticky funk of land of the freak . Without any awkwardness . The Wah-wah sound is featured heavily and king khans vocal have got a great play with the band .Speaking of the band the band is always on fire blazing with organs horns and the ever present guitar you are sonically surrounded with little flourishes . The album finishes out with the Ballad of Lady Godiva an obvious nod to Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground kicks off with this beautifully absurd gem

about reefer dreams and acrobatics"
This is Truly an incredible piece of modern music that knows its roots and knows its future . I Think these guys have an incredible future ahead of them .

So I short changed you on the last post . So here is my makeup post . Ever listen to Kelley Stoltz ? His music has been compared to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys with a modern spin . He has got a great back story , Kelley started out as a "fan mail" sorter for Jeff Buckley . Kelley also toured with The Raconteurs in 2006 . This song is from his 2006 album "Below The Branches". I have no idea how how I managed to miss out on this but I'm glad I found him , now you have too.

Mason Jennings comes from minnesota and has been putting out records since 1997 . Issac Brock signed Mason to his rcord label glacial pace and released the album Bone Clouds of mason's more straight forward . His songwriting and lyrics are incredible . I first truly stumbled on him on the I'm not there soundtrack . Jackson Square is one of those story songs and its so real , you are there . By the time you get done listening you'll have left Jackson Square .

I mean its Green Day we are not expecting them to reinvent the wheel just deliver us some great guitars and some sweet hooks and they have completed that objective. Take another look and its like a rallying cry a call to arms almost.Adding to my excitement is that 21st century breakdown was produced by Butch Vig. I want to do a full and proper post on these guys . Who are they? The Secret machines coming from the lone star state Texas . They make epic songs each album is a bit different. I am still wrestling with these guys but I think overall they are making some cool sounds.

Earlier this year he released Advance Battery Life that was really a compilation, Now he just released a album of all new material Vs. Children. This is the album that shows Owen growing up and the lyrics reflect that . It's a great album and here is the single .

The '59 Sound was one of my most played albums of 2008 . I actually handed it out as a christmas present.

I kept returning to it over and over it takes a little bit of listening for a band to become your band , however there was no learning curve with these guys . Its just straight out of the gates rock and roll. Lead singer Brian Fallon writes lyrics that take you in and introduce you around his world of heart break , sadness , lost saturday nights . They wear their influences on their sleeve like a badge of honor we have heard this before but its the honest sincerity of Brian Fallon that makes it click . Like the lyrics in the song The 59' Sound starts off with wondering about what song they are going play when you go and culminates with boys and girls ain't supposed to die on a saturday night. With two albums and an ep out it will be interesting to see where these guys go go . Brian just recently stopped by Spin to perform a couple of acoustic tracks . Particularly biting is the cover of paul westerberg's left of the dial . If you dig the acoustic set then Grab the acoustic rarities down below.

Jacks got a brand new band

Jack White's got a brand new band called The Dead Weather .He's sitting behind the drums while Alison Mosshart of The Kills takes vocal duties.The Band is Rounded out by familiar band mate Lawrence Keller on bass and Dean Ferita on guitar and keyboard.

They had their first official show last night in New York at the Bowery Ballroom . From the noise on the Internets this morning it was a hell of a show with Jack White As vicious on drums as he is on guitar and the rest of the band showing showing a lot of swagger and comfortableness . Their new seven inch single dead weather is out on record store day and their full length available sometime in June . Stay tuned for more updates . Imagine if you will a band with two Drummers and two electric bassists. Thats the basis for The Dirtbombs combining rock , punk , blues , soul and even electric disco .

The group is masterminded by garage genius Mick Collins. Who you may remember fronted a little band called The Gories. If you dont know who The Gories are then check this out . The Gories made some exciting news earlier this month announcing a reunion tour kickin off june 27th . The Dirtbombs Was micks post gories musical incarnation and have released a number of comps , albums, singles. Their newest is we have you surrounded is the most complete dirtbombs record to date and thats saying a lot considering the quality of past releases. Check out a few songs from The Chariots of Fire E.P released in 2001 . The cover of the King classic is worth the price of admisson alone. Check it out .
